6 Ways to Make Affordable Internet a Reality

Saving money is a nice feeling, particularly on expensive (but often essential) purchases like the Internet.

If you’re content with your Internet provider but not your bill, try bundling your services or negotiating with the provider for a better rate. And, if you’re fortunate enough to have choices, switching providers can help you land a great deal.

Here are some tips to make affordable internet service a reality:

  1. Buy Your Modem and Router

Do you intend on having the same internet provider for a few years? It might be more inexpensive to purchase your internet hardware rather than opt for a rental.

You may have to shell out $10 to $15 per month to rent equipment from providers. If you stay with that provider for two years, the total rental bill will range from $240 to $360. You can purchase a highly-rated modem and router for not more than $200.

  1. Lower Your Speed

Internet providers are making serious advances with high-speed Internet, and many plans guarantee download speeds of at least 100 Mbps. A majority of families don’t require that level of service but if you do, then go for it.

Switching down to a lower speed could be beneficial to your monthly bill by saving you around $20 or more every month, based on your carrier. First, begin by understanding what speed you need, then reach out to your provider to downgrade your plan.

  1. Make Negotiations

Being a good negotiator doesn’t require you to be a fast-talking salesperson. Maintain a simple position: I know of a deal better than this one elsewhere, and I’m ready to leave your company to claim it.

  1. Bundle Your Services

If you already have cable, you can score big savings with a few providers by merging your cable and internet service. However, stay wary of the up-sell as carriers may tempt you into extra speed or channels for an additional $5 or $10 per month. Even the tiniest monthly increase adds up over time and defeats your money-saving goal.

  1. Explore Government Subsidies

The government provides broadband internet subsidies if you fall below a particular income bracket or are enrolled in specific government programs.

  1. Get the Bare Minimum Internet Service

If you’re persistent about saving money while keeping your internet connection, try downgrading to a limited-data mobile hotspot plan.

These plans might be best for people who only send emails or browse social media occasionally, but they are not suitable for those who stream videos.
