Living With Someone Who Is Also Working From Home? These Tips Will Make It Easier!

There’s a whole lot of unhelpful information on the internet about how to be more productive when working from home and ways to create a distinct space for yourself to work out of – but any tips you find on remote working may be hard to implement, especially if you live with someone who is also working remotely like you.

So in that spirit, we’ve jotted down some quick hacks to help you get the most of the space you already reside in (even if it’s tiny!).

Take Some Time to Decide Your Workstations

Initially, either of you may be a bit resistant about spending 20 to 30 minutes to strategize where you should each set up your workstations. Eventually, the hesitant party needs to be convinced to start brainstorming and move some furniture around to ensure you both have the most feasible setup.

Figuring out the perfect setup is totally worth the time and just keep in mind that the changes you make can be temporary. For instance, you can share your rolling CB2 table by sitting on opposite sides, with a little free space to the left of both of you.

Share and Sync Your Schedules

Every morning, both of you should skim through your calendars and send each other an email of meetings you have that day. That way, you won’t end up loudly making lunch while the other person has to do a Zoom presentation.

You can even take your schedule synchronization further and rearrange your work meetings whenever possible. This will enable you both to have quiet work sprints throughout the day and set times to have meals and bond.

Remind Each Other 10 Minutes Prior to a Call

By alerting your roommate when you have a call coming up, even if you already emailed them your schedule that morning, you are giving them time to fix themselves a snack or coffee. Or, if they were also about to get on a sudden call, it gives you both time to figure out a solution, such as rescheduling or relocating to the bathroom.

Make a Popup Office

Taking calls from the bathroom may not be ideal. In such a scenario, consider converting your entryway to an office popup.

Play Focus Music

If you’re not accustomed to working in such a tiny space together, little things such as loudly slurping coffee might become big annoyances. Putting on focus music (without lyrics) is a great way to eliminate any distracting noises.
